Welcome to simpldiscipline!

This quick start guide will help district administrators review and configure the most important simpldiscipline settings for their district and schools.

Use the quick links on this page to configure school information, delegated administrative access, teacher visibility, discipline options, attendance mapping, communications, calendars, users, automation, reporting, and more.

Before You Begin
Every district uses simpldiscipline a little differently. Some settings apply district-wide, while others can be configured separately by school or delegated to school-level administrators. We recommend reviewing these settings during your initial implementation and again before each school year.

🏫 School & District Information

Update a School Name
Confirm that each school's name is displayed correctly throughout simpldiscipline.
Upload or Change a School Logo
Upload the school logos used throughout simpldiscipline and on supported letters and documents.
Update Principal or Assistant Principal Information
Review the administrator information associated with each school and update the names used on generated letters and documents.
Update Attendance Contact Information
If your district uses the Truancy Center, review each school's attendance contact name, phone number, email address, and absence excuse link.
Update the District Support Contact
Configure the district contact email address users should contact when they need district-level assistance.

🛠️ Delegate Settings to School Administrators

Decide what your schools can manage

District administrators can determine which settings remain centrally managed by the district and which settings school administrators can manage for their own school.

Settings that can be delegated include Incident Calendar configuration, school information, teacher-visible behavior codes, teacher visibility settings, user management, and other supported administrative areas.

Delegating Administrative Settings to School-Level Users
Review the settings that can be delegated and decide which configuration areas your school administrators should be able to view or manage.

👤 Users, Roles & Permissions

Decide how user roles and permissions will be managed

Districts should decide whether user roles and special permissions will be managed manually by an administrator or assigned automatically based on the user's job title imported from the SIS.

Automatic role assignment can help reduce ongoing user management by assigning supported roles and permissions when a user's job title matches rules configured by the district. If your district prefers more direct control, roles and permissions can continue to be managed manually.

Understanding User Roles & Special Permissions
Review the available simpldiscipline roles and special permissions and understand what each allows a user to view and manage.
Manually Updating User Roles & Permissions
Learn how administrators can manually update user access and assign the appropriate roles and special permissions.
Automatic Role & Permission Assignment by Job Title
Configure simpldiscipline to automatically assign roles and/or special permissions based on the job title associated with a user's SIS staff record.

👀 Teacher Access & Visibility

What should teachers be able to see?

Districts can determine how much information teachers can view for students rostered to them. You can provide access to permitted student discipline information, limit teachers to information they personally documented, or provide counts that help identify patterns without displaying the underlying incident details.

Configure Teacher Visibility by School
Determine what discipline incidents, minor infractions, positive referrals, and notes teachers can view for their rostered students.
Discipline Incident Progressive Discipline Counts
Allow teachers to see counts of discipline incidents and/or behaviors for their rostered students without necessarily providing access to the underlying incident details.
Minor Infraction Progressive Discipline Counts
Configure whether teachers can see counts of minor infractions and/or minor behaviors for their rostered students.

🏷️ Behavior & Action Codes

Configure Teacher-Visible Behavior Codes
Control which behavior codes teachers can select when submitting a discipline incident. The teacher-selected behavior serves as a placeholder until an administrator reviews and processes the incident.
Configure Permitted Behavior & Action Codes
Control which SIS behavior and action codes administrators can select when processing incidents in simpldiscipline.

🕒 Attendance Mapping

Automatically write attendance to your SIS

simpldiscipline can automatically write attendance to your SIS when a Reviewer assigns a configured discipline action code. Attendance codes must first be mapped to the appropriate action codes, and mappings can be configured separately for each school.

Attendance Code Mapping: Automatically Write Attendance to the SIS
Configure which attendance codes simpldiscipline should automatically write to the SIS when a Reviewer assigns specific discipline action codes. Attendance mappings can be configured by school or mass assigned across schools.

📋 Minor Infractions & Student Notes

Configure Minor Infraction Options
Add, disable, or review the minor behaviors, actions, and activity options available to staff.
Manage Student Note Types
Add, edit, or disable the note types staff can use when documenting information on a student's record.

✉️ Parent/Guardian Communications

Configure Parent/Guardian Contact Settings
Determine which parent and guardian contacts imported from your SIS are available for email communication in simpldiscipline.
Configure Default Letter Templates
Select the default letter templates used for discipline incidents, minor infractions, positive referrals, and other supported areas.
Enable Automated Parent/Guardian Emails
Configure automated parent/guardian emails for supported Real-Time Alerts and Positive Referrals and determine whether schools can manage applicable automated email settings.

📅 Incident Calendar

Configure the Incident Calendar
Configure the events and options available on each school's Incident Calendar, including local action names and supported calendar settings.
Configure Calendar Event Status & Attendance
Determine how applicable Incident Calendar events should affect attendance and how event statuses should be managed.

⚙️ Additional Discipline Settings

Lock the Original Approver Name
Choose whether the approver name changes when another administrator edits an approved incident or remains assigned to the administrator who originally approved it.

⚡ Real-Time Alerts & Automation

Automate common student workflows

Real-Time Alerts allow districts and schools to automatically identify students when specific attendance, discipline, or student criteria are met.

Rules can be used to automate workflows such as identifying students who reach a certain number of tardies, monitoring attendance or discipline thresholds, or notifying staff when intervention or follow-up may be needed.

Real-Time Alerts & Automation
Explore the available Real-Time Alert settings and learn how to build automated workflows for your district and schools.

📊 Reports & Analytics

Reports & Analytics
Use simpldiscipline reports and analytics to review district and school data, identify trends, monitor activity, and access information for discipline, attendance, interventions, student history, and more.

🔐 Technical & Login Configuration

Email Allowlist
Make sure your district's email and security systems allow messages from simpldiscipline so system-generated communications are not blocked or sent to spam.
ClassLink Single Sign-On Configuration
If your district uses ClassLink, configure simpldiscipline and make it available to the appropriate users through ClassLink LaunchPad.
Adding simpldiscipline to Clever
If your district uses Clever, add simpldiscipline to the appropriate Clever dashboard or portal for easy user access.

✅ Recommended Annual Review

Review your configuration before each school year

School leadership, district procedures, SIS codes, staff job titles, user access, attendance mappings, and communication preferences can change from year to year.

We recommend reviewing the settings above before each school year to make sure simpldiscipline continues to match how your district wants staff to submit, review, communicate, and manage student discipline and attendance information.
