Every district uses simpldiscipline a little differently. Before rolling out the system, or when reviewing your configuration for a new school year, we recommend reviewing the settings below.
Many of these settings are district-wide, while others can be configured differently for each school. Use this checklist to make sure simpldiscipline is configured to match your district's processes and expectations.
Start by confirming that the basic information for your district and schools is accurate. This information may appear on letters, reports, truancy documents, and other areas of simpldiscipline.
Confirm that each school's name is displayed correctly.
Update School Name
Upload a logo for each school. School logos may be used on generated letters and other documents.
Uploading or Changing a School Logo
Review the principal and administrator information associated with each school and make any necessary updates.
Update Principal or Administrator Information
If your district uses the Truancy Center, confirm that each school's attendance contact name, phone number, email address, and absence excuse link are correct.
Updating the Attendance Contact Name, Phone Number, Email, or Absence Excuse Link
Configure the district contact email address that users should contact when they need assistance from your district. This helps direct district-specific questions to the appropriate person or team.
Update District Contact Email Address
One of the most important configuration decisions is determining what information teachers should be able to see about their rostered students.
Decide whether teachers should be able to view discipline incidents and minor infractions for their rostered students. Visibility can be configured based on your district's policies and can also be managed by school.
Discipline Incident Count – Configuring Visibility Settings
Minor Infraction Count – Configuring Visibility Settings
Configuring Incident Visibility by School
If you do not want teachers to see details of discipline incidents or minor infractions they did not personally document, you should then consider whether teachers should see counts of incidents, minor infractions, and/or specific behaviors for their rostered students. These counts can help teachers understand patterns without necessarily giving them access to all underlying incident details.
How Teachers Can View Discipline Incident and Behavior Counts
How Teachers Can View Minor Infraction and Behavior Counts
When teachers submit a discipline incident, they select a behavior code to use as the incident's placeholder title. Decide whether teachers should be able to select from all available behavior codes or only a specific set approved by your district or school.
Configure Teacher-Visible Behavior Codes When Submitting a Discipline Incident
Review the behavior and action codes imported from your Student Information System. Your SIS may contain outdated codes, codes marked "Do Not Use," or codes that your district does not want administrators selecting in simpldiscipline.
Configure which behavior and action codes should be available when administrators process discipline incidents.
Configure Permitted Behavior and Action Codes
Review the minor behaviors, actions, and activity options available to staff. Disable options your district does not use and add any district-specific options that are needed.
Add/Disable Minor Behaviors, Actions, and Activity Options
Review the note types available when staff add notes to a student's record. Note types can be added, edited, or disabled to match your district's processes.
Managing Note Types (Add, Edit, or Disable)
Decide how you want the approver name to be maintained after an incident is approved. You can allow the approver name to update when another administrator edits the incident, which means the most recent editor will be listed as the approver. Alternatively, you can lock the approver name so the administrator who originally approved the incident remains listed as the approver.
Locking the Original Approver Name
Decide which parent and guardian contacts imported from your SIS should be available to email in simpldiscipline.
Configuring Parent/Guardian Contact Settings
Review the default letter templates used by your district. Default templates can be configured for discipline incidents, minor infractions, and positive referrals. Setting these defaults helps ensure staff are using the appropriate letter when generating documents for parents or guardians.
Configure Default Letter Templates
The Incident Calendar can be customized to match how each school manages assignments such as ISS, OSS, detention, and other discipline-related events.
Review the calendar configuration for each school, including the event types and options staff will use when scheduling students.
Customizing the Incident Calendar
Review how calendar event statuses and attendance should be handled for your schools.
Configuring Calendar Event Status & Attendance
Review whether your schools want to use automatic student email notifications for applicable calendar events and configure those options appropriately.
Automatically Email Students from the Incident Calendar
Make sure your district's email and security systems allow messages from simpldiscipline. Completing this step helps prevent system-generated notifications from being blocked or sent to spam.
Email Allowlist
If your district uses ClassLink, confirm that simpldiscipline has been properly configured and made available to the appropriate users through the ClassLink LaunchPad.
ClassLink Single Sign-On (SSO) Configuration
If your district uses Clever, confirm that simpldiscipline has been added to the appropriate Clever dashboard or portal so users can easily access the system.
Adding a Custom Link in Clever – simpldiscipline
We recommend reviewing these settings when initially implementing simpldiscipline and again before the beginning of each school year. It is also a good idea to revisit them whenever your district changes discipline procedures, school leadership, contact information, SIS codes, or internal policies.
Not every setting needs to be configured the same way for every district. The goal is to make sure simpldiscipline reflects how your district wants staff to submit, review, communicate, and manage student discipline information.
