Configure Teacher Access and Visibility

One of the most important system configuration decisions in simpldiscipline is determining what teachers should be able to see and access for their rostered students.

Most settings related to teacher access are located in the Teacher Visibility section of the red Knowledge Base. These settings allow your district to determine how much discipline information teachers can see while still restricting their access to students rostered to them.

To review these settings: Navigate to the red Admin area > Visibility settings

For ease of access, the individual configuration options and related Knowledge Base articles are also linked below.

Incident and Minor Infraction Visibility

First, decide whether teachers should be able to view the details of discipline incidents and minor infractions for their rostered students.

Depending on your district's policies, you may choose to allow teachers to see incidents or infractions documented by other staff members, or restrict them to only the information they personally documented.

These visibility settings can also be configured by school when different schools within the district require different levels of access.

Progressive Discipline Counts

If you do not want teachers to see the details of discipline incidents or minor infractions they did not personally document, consider whether they should still be able to see progressive discipline counts for their rostered students.

These settings can give teachers visibility into the number of incidents, minor infractions, and/or specific behaviors associated with a student without providing access to the underlying incident or infraction details.

This can be helpful when you want teachers to recognize patterns of behavior while maintaining more restrictive access to individual student records.

Behavior Codes Available to Teachers

When teachers submit a discipline incident, they select a behavior code to use as the incident's placeholder title. This code is used during the submission and review process and is not necessarily the final behavior code selected by the administrator.

Decide whether teachers should be able to select from all available behavior codes or only a specific set of codes approved by your district or individual school.

Restricting teacher-visible behavior codes can be useful if your district wants administrators to make the final determination for certain behavior classifications or if there are SIS behavior codes that should only be available to administrators.

Questions to Consider

When reviewing your teacher visibility configuration, consider the following:

  • Should teachers see discipline incidents documented by other staff members for students rostered to them?
  • Should teachers see minor infractions documented by other staff members?
  • If teachers cannot see the underlying records, should they still see incident, infraction, or behavior counts?
  • Should these visibility settings be the same at every school, or should individual schools have different settings?
  • Should teachers be able to select all behavior codes when submitting an incident, or only a district- or school-approved list?

Reviewing these settings before rollout—and periodically throughout the school year—helps ensure teachers have the information they need while maintaining the level of student information access established by your district.
