Overlapping Action Warning for Calendar Event Actions

The Overlapping Action Warning helps prevent students from being scheduled for multiple discipline actions on the same day. When a teacher or administrator assigns a calendar-mapped action, simpldiscipline automatically checks whether the student already has another calendar-mapped action scheduled for that date.

If a conflict is found, the system displays a non-blocking warning identifying the conflicting action, the overlapping date(s), and whether the existing action originated from a discipline incident or a minor infraction. If you have permission to view the source record, a link is provided for quick access. You may choose to Cancel and review the conflict or Continue Anyway to save the action.

Configuration

No configuration is required to enable this feature. It is automatically available for all districts.

Important: Overlap detection only occurs for actions that are mapped to an Incident Calendar. If an action is not mapped to a calendar, it is not included in overlap detection.

How It Works

When a calendar-mapped action is added or updated, simpldiscipline compares it against all other calendar-mapped actions assigned to the same student from both discipline incidents and minor infractions. Full-day and partial-day actions are considered overlapping whenever they occur on the same calendar date.

Examples

Example 1: An administrator assigns a student In-School Suspension (ISS) on October 15. Before the incident is saved, simpldiscipline detects that the student already has Lunch Detention scheduled for that date and displays an overlap warning. The administrator can review the existing action or continue saving the incident.

Example 2: A teacher assigns After-School Detention to a student for November 3. The system detects that the student is already scheduled for Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) on the same date and displays a warning. The teacher can cancel to choose another date or continue saving the action if appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this prevent me from saving the incident?
No. The warning is informational only. You can either review the conflict or select Continue Anyway to save the action.

Which actions are checked?
Only actions that are mapped to an Incident Calendar are included in overlap detection. Both discipline incidents and minor infractions are evaluated. To add addtional actions to your incident calendar, review the Customizing The Incident Calendar article. 

Who sees links to the conflicting record?
Only users with permission to view the conflicting incident or minor infraction will see a link to open it.
