simpldiscipline supports two different options for incident titles. Your district's configuration determines whether the incident title is manually entered or automatically updated based on the Primary Behavior.

The two options are:
  1. Manually Entered Title – The submitter types the incident title.
  2. Automatic Title – simpldiscipline updates the title to match the Primary Behavior selected during approval.

Option 1: Manually Entered Incident Title

With this configuration, the incident title is an open text field. The teacher or administrator submitting the incident can enter a title of up to 80 characters.

The title entered by the submitter remains with the incident throughout the review process. simpldiscipline does not automatically change the title when an administrator changes or adds behaviors.

Example
A teacher submits an incident titled Disruption During Lunch. During review, the administrator determines that the appropriate behavior is Disrespect.

The incident title will remain Disruption During Lunch unless the administrator manually changes it.

How to Edit the Incident Title During Approval

If your district uses manually entered incident titles, administrators can update the title directly from the Approve Incident page before approving the incident.

  1. Open the pending incident and begin the approval process.
  2. Review and make any necessary changes to the students, behaviors, actions, and other incident information.
  3. Scroll toward the bottom of the Approve Incident page.
  4. Locate and expand the Incident Details section.
  5. Update the Incident Title as needed.
  6. Continue to the Update Incident section to save or complete the incide

Important: The Incident Details section is located near the bottom of the approval page, directly above Update Incident. It may be collapsed, so you will need to expand it to view and edit the title.

Option 2: Automatic Title Based on the Primary Behavior

This is the configuration used by the majority of simpldiscipline districts.

With this configuration, the incident title is ultimately determined by the Primary Behavior selected by the administrator during the approval process.

When the Incident Is Submitted

When a teacher or staff member initially submits an incident, they select a behavior that is temporarily used as the incident title. This serves as a placeholder title while the incident is pending and provides administrators with context when viewing pending incidents or receiving notifications.

When the Administrator Approves the Incident

During the approval process, the administrator reviews the behaviors associated with the incident and determines which behavior should be designated as the Primary Behavior.

The first behavior is selected as the Primary Behavior by default. However, the administrator can use the Primary Behavior toggle to designate a different behavior as primary.

Once the Primary Behavior is selected, simpldiscipline automatically updates the incident title to match the Primary Behavior.

Example

A teacher initially submits an incident using Disruption as the behavior/title.

During review, the administrator determines that the student should have the following behaviors:
  • Disruption
  • Disrespect
  • Insubordination
If the administrator designates Insubordination as the Primary Behavior, simpldiscipline automatically changes the incident title to Insubordination.

With the automatic title configuration, the administrator does not need to manually change the incident title.

Incidents Involving Multiple Students

When multiple students are included on the same incident, each student can have different behaviors associated with their involvement. However, the overall incident still has one shared incident title.

For example:
  • Student A: Fighting
  • Student B: Disruptive Conduct

Although the students can have different behavior records, there is still only one title for the overall incident.

This is because most Student Information Systems (SIS) use a one-to-many relationship for incidents: one incident record can contain multiple students, but the incident itself has only one title. Because of this SIS structure, simpldiscipline cannot assign a different incident title to each individual student when they are part of the same incident.

Quick Comparison

Configuration How the Title Works
Manually Entered Title The submitter enters the title. An administrator can manually edit it from Incident Details on the Approve Incident page.
Automatic Primary Behavior Title The submitted behavior serves as a placeholder. During approval, simpldiscipline automatically changes the title to the behavior designated as Primary.
