The simpldiscipline Truancy Center includes two primary views: the Truancy Dashboard and the Truancy Task List. While both provide information about student truancy, they serve very different purposes.

Where should I work?
School staff should work from the Truancy Task List. The Dashboard is designed to provide an informational overview, while the Task List shows the students and tasks that currently require action.

Understanding the Two Views

Truancy Dashboard — Informational Overview

The Truancy Dashboard provides a high-level overview of students who have met your district's configured truancy criteria.

The Dashboard is designed primarily for informational and monitoring purposes. It can help you:

  • See how many students are at each truancy level, such as Truant, Habitual, or Chronic.
  • Review the overall truancy picture for your school or district.
  • Identify trends and plan interventions proactively.

The Dashboard includes students with both pending and completed truancy tasks. Because of this, seeing a student on the Dashboard does not necessarily mean there is currently something you need to complete for that student.

Truancy Task List — Your Working List

The Truancy Task List is the action-oriented portion of the Truancy Center and should be your primary workspace.

As students meet configured attendance criteria, simpldiscipline automatically creates truancy tasks. These tasks identify students who currently require school-level follow-up.

  • Tasks are automatically created when a student reaches a configured truancy level.
  • Open tasks represent students who currently require action.
  • Tasks guide staff through actions such as sending letters, establishing an AIP, documenting interventions, or building the truancy incident.
  • Tasks remain open until the required process is completed.

Think of the Task List as your actionable checklist for managing truancy.

Why Is a Student Still on the Dashboard?

A common source of confusion is seeing a student on the Truancy Dashboard after their task has already been completed.

Once a student meets the criteria for a truancy level, the student will remain visible on the Truancy Dashboard for the remainder of the academic year, even after the related task has been completed.

If attendance records are later updated and the student no longer meets the applicable truancy criteria, the student can be automatically removed from the Dashboard during the nightly sync.

What Happens When a Task Is Completed?

The Truancy Task List is a running list of open items that school staff need to address.

Once a task is completed, it is removed from the open task list. The student's name may still remain visible on the Truancy Dashboard because the Dashboard serves as a broader informational view of students who have met truancy criteria.

When a truancy task is completed, simpldiscipline will either create the truancy incident in PowerSchool or update the existing incident with any newly added information if an incident component is part of the task.

Recommended Workflow: Work From the Task List

1. Open the Truancy Center
Click the blue Reviewer Area button in the top-right corner of simpldiscipline, then select Truancy Center from the left-hand navigation menu.

2. Open the Truancy Task List
Click Truancy Tasks at the top of the Dashboard to view the active tasks that require action.

3. Filter Your Tasks
Use the available filters to narrow the Task List by truancy level, grade, or school. This is especially helpful for users who manage multiple locations.

4. Select View Task
Click View Task next to the student's name to review the student's attendance and the actions that need to be completed.

5. Complete the Required Truancy Process
Work within the task to document interventions, build the truancy incident, generate letters or an Attendance Intervention Plan, upload supporting documents, and complete the task when all required steps have been finished.

Need to Find an Older Task?

At the bottom of the Truancy Task List page, you can access the Completed and Archived task tabs. These sections allow you to review previously finished tasks, access related documents, and review the actions that were taken.

OR

Use the quick student lookup to to to a student overview page. All truancy tasks created, completed, or archived will show in the truancy tasks section of a student's overview page.

Key Takeaway: Work From the Truancy Task List
Use the Dashboard to monitor your school's overall truancy information. Use the Task List to do the work. If you are trying to determine which students currently need follow-up, letters, intervention, an AIP, or other action, the Truancy Task List should be your primary workspace.
